About penalties
This section outlines the maximum penalties that can be imposed for specific breaches of the:
- Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012 (Vic), which governs trader conduct in Victoria, and
- Competition and Consumer Act 2010 Schedule 2 - Australian Consumer Law (the Australian Consumer Law or ACL), which governs trader conduct in Australia and is applied as a law of Victoria by Part 2.2 of the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012.
To check the current penalty amounts visit Office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel website.
Breaches may not necessarily result in the penalty listed in the table but are the maximum penalty that may be imposed by a court following the finding of a breach or contravention.
