A trader has been convicted and fined $12,650 for selling cars while unlicensed.
Zehar Saoud, 33, of Truganina, was convicted of trading without a licence.
We took action against Mr Saoud after receiving a complaint in 2017 about vehicles being purchased from auction houses.
Between 15 June 2017 and 15 March 2018, Mr Saoud sold 23 motor cars without holding a motor car trader's licence.
The matter was heard on 19 July at the Werribee Magistrates' Court.
We took this action because consumers buying a car from an unlicensed trader are not covered by the same legal protections as when buying from a licensed motor car trader and may not even be aware they aren't dealing with a private seller.
If you're considering buying a car, read about the professional conduct obligations of motor car traders and check a trader's licence status before engaging them, by viewing the motor car traders public register.
