Consumer Affairs Victoria’s renting taskforce has begun its blitz of rental properties across Victoria, to make sure they meet the mandatory minimum standards.

On Saturday 3 August, the taskforce visited rental properties that were open for inspection in Clayton, where over 60% of homes are rentals. This is the first of many visits planned for the coming months as the taskforce cracks down on non-compliant properties.

After recent reports from the community via our new webform, the taskforce engaged with estate agents to request rental properties were upgraded and repaired to meet the minimum standards before being leased.

Consumer Affairs Victoria takes breaches seriously. Letting a new renter move into a property that doesn’t meet these standards is a crime with fines applying, and maximum penalties over $11,000 for individuals and over $59,000 for companies.

If you see an advertised rental property that doesn’t meet the minimum standards, you can report it to us anonymously through our new online form.
